I began my process for this project reflecting upon, “only in the darkness can you see the stars” said by Martin Luther King Jr and how it could relate to events in everyday life, due to the fact that the premise of this project was to be based on a quote utilized in a previous project for the same course.
From my perception, this message spoke to the wonderful things in life that can act as beacons that steer you out of your darkness, whatever darkness that may be. Thus, given that I wanted to highlight these wonderful things in life, I decided to focus on what I considered wonderful, artistry and the act of visual storytelling. Consequently, I decided to showcase an organization in Toronto that showcased both artistry and the act of visual storytelling in their events, the Toronto Public Library.
Due to the fact that my class and I had to capture a sense of our first project in our covers, I focused on producing a front cover that captured both the essential message of the quote and the layered effect I used in developing the first project. The words used on the cover of the final project all relate to the wonderful things in life that can solidify our connection to life even in the “darkness.”
In my primary renders I experimented with different layouts but eventually settled on layouts that would showcase images with a primarily vertical fashion. In constructing these layouts I really tried to make sure each page was consistent and yet unique. One thing that is always important to me in my design work is a comfortable use of white space and so I attempted to utilize white space in a way that would emphasize the images and the copy.
I did not produce the images/works of art used in this promotional booklet.
